Wanglalm - Penkenjoch

Route length: 41,3km Difficulty level: black

Wonderful gravel trails with view of the alps of the Zillervalley and the Hintertux glacier.
One of the most scenic trails in Zillertal leads from Mayrhofen into the Tux Valley and on to Wanglalm. Take the Mayrhofen ring road until the turn-off for Ginzling and follow signs for Bike Route Nr. 422. Turn left and continue on the road towards Ginzling and you will reach Zemmgrund. Turn right at Jochberg (422) and ride uphill to Finkenberg. Ride through the village and follow the Tuxer Strasse into the valley. The route leads through several avalanche galleries and on to Vorderlanersbach. After the supermarket next to a large fountain, keep right. Follow MTB signs for the Wanglalm. It doesn't take much longer to reach the tree-line after you cross the Rötlbach River. Ride past the relics of the former magnesite mine and follow the gravel trail, which leads steeply uphill over many winding bends. Once at the Wanglalm you will be pleased to know that you have completed the most challenging part of this route and now comes the highlight: the section to Penkenjoch is one of the most beautiful rides in the entire network or MTB trails. Just after Penkenjoch, turn right and ride along the new trail to the Penkenbahn cable car. Take the dirt trail from there down to Astegg.
From here, you join the asphalted road again, through Finkenberg and back to Mayrhofen. A wonderful day trip for bikers with stamina.
